Area congressman, U.S. Representative Bill Huizenga says he is “leaning toward” a run for U.S. Senate.

Political speculation in recent weeks indicated Huizenga was considering a run at the Senate, but according to a report in Politico, this is the strongest signal yet that he might decide to enter the race.

Congress is fresh back from the Easter recess and Huizenga reportedly told several Capitol Hill reporters Monday that he is “putting some key pieces in place” to get some advice on what he’s going to do and what (the campaign is) going to look like.

If he decides to get into the race, Huizenga would face former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who launched his campaign earlier this month.

According to the report in Politico, another indication that Huizenga is seriously considering entering the race, he reportedly spoke this week with President Donald Trump to discuss Michigan politics ahead of the president’s trip here today.

The open Senate seat comes after U.S. Senator Gary Peters announced he will be stepping down at the end of his current term.
