Dowagiac man in critical condition after car/pedestrian crash

The Dowagiac Police are currently investigating a serious car-pedestrian accident that has left one man in critical condition.

According to Public Safety Director Steven Grinnewald, officers responded to the crash report early Friday morning at approximately 4:32 a.m. at the intersection of W. Division St. and N. Front Street.

Upon arrival, they found 84-year-old John Reist of Dowagiac lying in the roadway. The driver involved, Chris Harter, explained that Mr. Reist was crossing W. Division St. heading north when he was struck by Harter’s vehicle while making a turn.

Mr. Reist was quickly transported to Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph and is currently in critical condition. Fortunately, Harter sustained no injuries. Authorities have confirmed that alcohol and speed were not contributing factors in the accident.
