Legislation would stop dumping of out of state hazardous materials in Michigan

There’s an effort to prevent the continued dumping of hazardous waste in Michigan from other states.

State Representative Reggie Miller and state Senator Darren Camilleri are reintroducing legislation to prevent waste dumping and raise landfill tipping fees in Michigan. Romulus Mayor Bob McCraight supports the move.

The state of Michigan has become a dumping ground for hazardous material,” McCraight said. “This is not a byproduct of industry or something that creates jobs. This is hazardous material disposal for hire. It’s for profit. It doesn’t create jobs. It doesn’t create an industry. It is disposed of hazardous material. And we’re going to bury it here right by the Great Lakes, which we are stewards of our waterways.”

McCrate says there were three train derailments in Romulus in 24 months and two had hazardous waste.
