Padres 2, Tigers 0 – Pivetta pitches Padres over Tigers 2-0 for San Diego’s 7th shutout in 24 games
Nick Pivetta allowed two hits over seven innings and the San Diego Padres recorded their seventh shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Pivetta (4-1) became the first pitcher in franchise history to work scoreless ball in three of his first five starts for the club. Pivetta struck out six and only allowed one runner to reach second base. He is 2-0 with a 0.45 ERA in his last three starts, giving up one run on nine hits in 20 innings. Elias Díaz homered for the Padres, who had lost four of six after a 14-3 start. Robert Suarez remained perfect in 10 save chances. The Tigers were held to three hits. Jack Flaherty (1-2) allowed two runs on five hits in six innings.
Twins 4, White Sox 2 – Byron Buxton’s diving catch seals the Twins’ 4-2 win over the struggling White Sox
Bailey Ober worked six strong innings to win his second straight start, Trevor Larnach hit a two-run homer and Byron Buxton made a diving catch to end the game and seal the Minnesota Twins’ 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox loaded the bases in the ninth inning on an infield single and two walks off Twins closer Jhoan Duran. But the 27-year-old right-hander allowed just one run and earned his second save in as many chances when center fielder Buxton made a leaping, game-saving catch at the warning track in right-center on a liner by Andrew Benintendi with 2 on.
Cubs 11, Dodgers 10 – F/10 – Happ hits game-ending single in the 10th as the Cubs rally past Dodgers 11-10
Ian Happ hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning, and the Chicago Cubs outlasted the Los Angeles Dodgers for a wild 11-10 victory. The Cubs were down to their last out in the ninth when Miguel Amaya hit a solo homer off Tanner Scott that landed in the basket in center field, sending a charge through the crowd of 36,425 at Wrigley Field. After Porter Hodge escaped a jam in the top of the 10th, Happ grounded the first pitch from Noah Davis into right field. Vidal Bruján scored easily from second as the Cubs poured out of the dugout to celebrate.

MLB – Dodgers Ohtani plays catch as he continues his comeback from elbow surgery
Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani has played catch in a continuation of his throwing program in his comeback from elbow surgery. Ohtani rejoined the Dodgers on Sunday after his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, gave birth to the couple’s first child in Southern California. Following an off day, the 30-year-old Ohtani threw in the outfield at Wrigley Field before an 11-10 loss to the Cubs in the opener of a two-game set. Manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani is expected to have a light bullpen session on Wednesday and a “full-blown bullpen” on Saturday.

NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles hopes to extend Joe Thuney after deals with Gordon, Edwards
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles hopes to sign guard Joe Thuney to a contract extension after getting deals done with cornerback Kyler Gordon and linebacker T.J. Edwards. The Bears had a shaky offensive line when they acquired the 32-year-old Thuney from Kansas City in a trade in March. Thuney is a nine-year veteran and an All-Pro the past two years. He played on two Super Bowl champions in New England and two more in Kansas City.
NFL -Anthony Richardson embraces competition with Daniel Jones to be Colts starting QB
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson understands why he’s competing for the starting job again. He needs to be more consistent. He needs to be more accurate. And he needs to be available to play more often. He expects more of himself, too. Richardson returned to the team complex Tuesday for the start of Indy’s offseason team activities. And he sounds as if he’s ready to his third NFL season by embracing the competition with the recently signed Daniel Jones to be the Colts starter next fall.
NFL – From 8-man to competitive CrossFit, prospects take different paths to NFL draft
Former Virginia safety Jonas Sanker took an unconventional path to the NFL draft. He attended high school in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he emerged as a star in eight-man football. Sanker’s rapid ascension from fast-break style prep games to college captain to the cusp of a pro career sounds more Hollywood than reality but Sanker has made it this far. He’s not alone in this year’s draft class. Several of this year’s class have taken atypical paths to get to this point.
NASCAR – Legge says she’s been receiving death threats after Xfinity crash at Rockingham
NASCAR driver Katherine Legge said she has been receiving “hate mail” and “death threats” from auto racing fans after a crash last weekend at Rockingham. Legge was off the pace when she was hit by William Sawalich and collected Kasey Kahne. Legge said Tuesday on her “Throttle Therapy” podcast that “the inappropriate social media comments I’ve received aren’t just disturbing, they are unacceptable." The 44-year-old Legge has started four Indianapolis 500s and has been a regular in several series around the world. But she is a relative novice when it comes to stock cars. She crashed in her Cup Series debut at Phoenix earlier this season.
NCAA – NCAA passes series of rules that sets table for schools to pay players directly
The NCAA has passed rules that would upend decades of precedent by allowing colleges to pay their athletes per terms of a multibillion-dollar lawsuit settlement expected to go into effect this summer. The nine proposals passed by the NCAA board were largely expected but still mark a defining day in the history of college sports. An athlete’s ability to be paid directly by his or her university in on track to be enshrined in a rulebook that forbid that kind of relationship for decades.
