Michigan lawmakers are debating legislation that would limit cell phone use in schools.
A state House Committee is taking testimony from teachers and administrators on the plan this week. Casey Noce, a middle school teacher at Northville Christian School, talked about how they handle the issue there.
“We often cite the wait until Eighth Movement, which encourages parents not to buy smartphones for their children until eighth grade,” Noce said. “But as far as policies go, our school is a no-phone zone. We use paper and books at our school.”
The legislation calls for school districts to prohibit elementary school students from having a phone at school at all, middle school students from using a phone during school hours, and high schoolers from using a phone during class.
