Southbound US-31 is set to undergo repairs starting next week.
Michigan Department of Transportation’s Nick Schirripa tells us this will be a 4-month long project that includes pavement repairs on more than 12 miles of the southbound lanes.
“We did the northbound side in 2023 and then this year we’re doing the southbound side,” Schirripa says. “The southbound side work we’re doing isn’t as extensive, it doesn’t need quite as much as the northbound side needed. This is essentially repaving. We are essentially putting a new pavement on the road. There is some concrete pavement repair as well as asphalt.”
Project work will begin on April 28. One lane of southbound US-31 will remain open throughout construction, but there will be short duration closures of three ramps, Exit 3 to US-12, the Niles-Buchanan Road entrance ramp, and the Walton Road entrance, while concrete cures.
“That’ll really come down to when the contractor gets there,” Schirripa says. “They’ll start at point A and work to point B and as they work along, that’s when they’ll get there.
During the Berrien County Youth Fair, contractors will be working on the southern portion of the project area to reduce traffic disruptions.
The total project is expected to be complete by end of August, barring weather and contractor work.
