Two civil rights complaints filed against Hagar Township have been dismissed by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

Hagar Township Supervisor Izzy DiMaggio tells us a resident filed the complaints in 2023 when there was a vacancy on the township planning commission.

“There was an opening on the planning commission,” DiMaggio said. “He wanted to be appointed to the planning commission. Well, I appointed Peter Colovos, who was a former trustee. He did not like that, and so he filed a complaint saying that he was denied because of his Irish origin.”

DiMaggio says Hagar Township doesn’t discriminate against anyone for being Irish or anything else. He says the state took a while, but it’s finally dismissed the complaints.

We finally got word, official word, from the Department of Civil Rights, State of Michigan, that the claims were denied no basis at all. So it took like a year and a half for them to make a decision.”

The township board got official word this week.

DiMaggio says the township has several people of Irish descent who serve on various boards and committees.
