The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office is honoring two students from Hartford High School for their heroic actions.

On March 13, Sheriff Daniel Abbot tells us that three teenagers set a construction trailer on fire in Hartford. Nearby residents, Rigo Moreles and Kamryn Johnson, quickly grabbed fire extinguishers and rushed to the scene to put out the flames, saving both the trailer and its contents.

On April 14, Sheriff Abbot awarded Moreles and Johnson the title of Honorary Sheriff Deputies in recognition of their bravery during the incident. Additionally, the Hartford Fire Department presented the students with a certificate, two new fire extinguishers, and a photo commemorating their courageous act.

In a press release, Sheriff Abbot expressed his admiration for the students, stating, “It was truly great to see young adults in our community not afraid to do the right thing when it needed to be done.”
