A Sawyer man is dead after being hit by a semi on I-94 on Saturday.
The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says deputies responded to the scene on eastbound I-94 near Browntown in Lake Township around 3:45 a.m. They spoke to the truck driver, who told them he’d been eastbound when an animal appeared in the road and he couldn’t avoid it. After stopping his truck, he walked back toward the scene and realized he’d hit a person.
Medic 1 arrived on the scene a short time later and the pedestrian, identified as 35-year-old Jose Hernandez of Sawyer, was pronounced dead.
Police learned Hernandez had been out walking some distance during the night and ended up on the highway where he eventually got hit. It is not known why he was on the highway.
The driver of the semi, a Dearborn man, was not hurt.
Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash. They continue to investigate, seeking to learn how Hernandez came to be in the road.
