Southwestern Michigan College is enhancing its wrestling program by adding a new facility.
Earlier this week, SMC announced the expansion of its fitness and gymnasium building, which will include a brand new 11,195 square-foot wrestling room.
Wrestling coach Todd Hesson stated that this new space will double the mat capacity for practice sessions and provide additional competition space.
“Just adds another level, another dimension to our school in general,” Hesson says. “I mean, obviously wrestling and athletics, but just overall to our school.”
The new facility will also feature a dedicated fitness and warm-up area, a coach’s office, locker rooms, and extra restrooms. It will offer more space to accommodate the upcoming women’s wrestling program.
“We’ll have two different mats in there for both programs, and it just gives us more space,” Hesson says. “We’ve got a lot of kids coming in, and this just improves at every level for us.”
The project will be carried out by E&L Construction from Flint. Work is set to begin this month, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned for May.
The completion of the project is expected by February 2026.
