Yankees 4, Tigers 3 – Fried outduels high school teammate Flaherty, helps Yankees beat Tigers 4-3 to avoid sweep
Max Fried threw seven scoreless innings to outduel high school teammate Jack Flaherty, Ben Rice hit a two-run homer in the seventh and AL MVP Aaron Judge drove in two more runs to help the New York Yankees hold off the Detroit Tigers 4-3. Detroit loaded the bases against Devin Williams with two outs in the ninth, scored a run on a wild pitch and chased him on Zach McKinstry’s two-run single to pull within a run. Mark Leiter Jr. entered and ended the threat, getting Justyn-Henry Malloy out on a game-ending fly for his first save.

Guardians 3, White Sox 2 – Santana homers and Guardians hold on for 3-2 win over White Sox in unusual finish
Carlos Santana homered and the Cleveland Guardians held off the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in a game that ended on a bizarre play. The White Sox had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning when Miguel Vargas singled through the hole at shortstop. Jacob Amaya scored and it seemed Mike Tauchman was going to tie the game before he appeared to injure himself while rounding third base. Tauchman, who just came off the injured list after a right hamstring strain, was tagged out by catcher Austin Hedges for the final out after the throw from left fielder Steven Kwan.

Rangers 6, Cubs 2 – Seager homers twice as Rangers avoid a sweep in Chicago, beat Cubs 6-2
Texas shortstop Corey Seager homered twice as the Rangers avoided a sweep in Chicago, beating the Cubs 6-2. The two-time World Series MVP opened the game with a solo shot to left-center, and then lined another solo home run to right field in the seventh to put the Rangers up five. It was Seager’s 18th career game with multiple home runs and his first since August 19, 2024. Rangers pitcher Tyler Mahle held Chicago to just two hits in seven innings. The right-hander allowed one earned run and lowered his season ERA to 1.32.

MLB – Skubal glad the keyhole at Comerica Park is gone after Tigers asked for input
The Detroit Tigers are wrapping up their first homestand with a subtle change on the field at Comerica Park, putting grass over a strip of dirt that used to be between the pitcher’s mound and home plate. AL Cy Young Award and pitching Triple Crown winner Tarik Skubal said Wednesday morning he’s glad the team got rid of the keyhole, making the lefty’s sightline the same as it is in every other ballpark in Major League Baseball. The Tigers were the last team in the majors to have the throwback feature, which was common in the 1800s and early 1900s.

MLB – Bellinger says he won’t eat chicken wings after suspected case of food poisoning
New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger is swearing off chicken wings. Bellinger says he will not eat chicken wings for five years after he was scratched from the lineup with a suspected case of food poisoning. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Bellinger started dealing with an upset stomach on Monday night, after the Yankees lost the series-opening game, and it lingered enough that he didn’t play Tuesday. Bellinger was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in New York’s 4-3 win at Detroit that avoided a three-game sweep.

MLB – Cubs left-hander Justin Steele placed on injured list because of elbow tendinitis
The Chicago Cubs placed left-hander Justin Steele on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday because of left elbow tendinitis. Steele said he began to feel discomfort during the fourth or fifth inning of his most recent start, a 7-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday. Despite the soreness, Steele threw seven scoreless innings against Texas, striking out eight and allowing just three hits. For the season, Steele has an 4.76 ERA in 22.2 innings in four starts.

Josh Giddey dominated with 28 points, 16 rebounds and 11 assists and the Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 119-111 in a game with heavy seeding implications. Giddey extended a career high with his seventh triple-double as the ninth-place Bulls moved a game ahead of Miami in the Eastern Conference. They also pulled within a half-game of Atlanta for the eighth seed. The ninth-place team gets a home game against the 10th seed in the play-in tournament. The winner then visits the loser of the game between the seventh and eighth seeds. Kevin Huerter scored 22. Nikola Vucevic added 20 points and 11 rebounds. Coby White scored 18 and Matas Buzelis finished with 17 points. Miami’s Tyler Herro scored 30.

NBA – Emotional return for Luka and Mavs fans in his 1st game in Dallas since trade
Luka Doncic entered the court with the Los Angeles Lakers for his first game back in Dallas to cheers in an arena where draped over every seat was a T-shirt with the Slovenian phrase for thank you for everything. Then came the tribute. A more than two-minute highlight video of Doncic’s time with the Mavericks was shown after the rest of the Lakers starting lineup had been introduced. It was an emotional night for the 26-year-old Doncic and the Mavericks fans. He spent his first 5 1/2 NBA seasons of his career in Dallas before the seismic trade two months ago. He scored 45 points as the Lakers won to clinch a playoff spot.

NCAAHKY – Defending champ Denver tops Frozen 4 field
Denver and Boston University bring the championship pedigree to the Frozen Four semifinals being played in St. Louis on Thursday. And the field is rounded out by two first-timers in Western Michigan and Penn State. Denver is the defending champion and faces NCHC conference rival Western Michigan, the last remaining No. 1 seed still playing. Boston University will play Penn State, which only launched its hockey program in 2011-12. Denver is seeking to win its third tournament in four years, and NCAA-leading 11th overall. BU lost in the semifinal round in each of the past two years, and won its fifth title in 2009.

WNBA – France’s Dominique Malonga among players to watch during WNBA draft
Paige Bueckers is clearly the best-known player in Monday’s WNBA draft, but Dominique Malonga of France is among the most interesting. Curiosity around the 6-foot-6 forward seems to be growing. There’s not much doubt Bueckers is going to have an immediate impact on Dallas on and off the court as the team’s first pick, giving the Wings one of the most efficient players coming out of college in quite some time. Whether other players in the draft can offer quick help to teams will be seen over the next few months. A lot of that depends on which teams draft which players and how that fit evolves.

Golf – The Masters ends the 9-month wait for golf’s most anticipated major
For a sports renowned for moving slowly, the Masters can’t get started fast enough. Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are the main attractions for the most anticipated major of the golf season. The final day of rehearsal brought 9-hole practice rounds and the Par 3 Tournament. The Masters is so different from the other majors. It has the smallest field on the prettiest course. And players have been waiting nine months for the next major. Scheffler says it’s all about preparation. McIlroy says if players aren’t ready by now then they probably have no chance of winning a green jacket.
