Water in Dowagiac is now safe to use.
Late Wednesday night, the city of Dowagiac lifted the boil water advisory that had been in effect since April 7, after a dead squirrel was discovered at the Water Treatment Plant. Laboratory results returned negative for bacterial contamination, meaning it is no longer necessary to boil water for drinking and cooking.
This was the first city-wide boil water advisory in several years.
Residents are advised to run their faucets with cold water for 5 minutes, starting with the one closest to where the water enters their home.
