Two eaglets born in Michigan

A couple of eaglets have hatched in northern Michigan, and you might be able to catch a glimpse of them on an eagle cam.

The eaglets hatched in the past few days in Traverse City and the eagle cam was launched soon after. Usually, you can see one of the eagle parents, Harry or Harriet, over the babies.

So, how are eagles doing in Michigan? DNR bird biologist Karen Cleveland says the once endangered eagle is doing well.

You can find eagles all the way from the Ohio and Indiana state line, all the way through the U.P. at this point,” Cleveland said. “I don’t think there’s a single county in Michigan where we don’t have eagles nesting now. And so from that perspective, yes, common. From the perspective of folks who will see them drifting around in the sky, pretty much anywhere in the state of Michigan at odd intervals, yes, common.”

Cleveland says eagles came off the endangered list in 2007, but they’re still protected under the Bald Eagle Protection Act.
