The calendar says it’s spring, but we know it’s actually pothole season.
The frequent swings in temperatures across the state are leaving the roads and highways with potholes. Dr. Upul Attanayake, a professor of civil construction engineering at Western Michigan University, says the state could do a better job when it comes to infrastructure.
“Find mitigation strategies to get the water out from the roadways as soon as possible because otherwise it’s going to infiltrate and cause more damage to the roadways,” Attanayake said.
Attanayake says with more money, the state could build infrastructure that directs water away from the roads. That would help cut down on potholes and would be an effective prevention strategy.
