The Michigan Flywheelers Museum in South Haven is gearing up for its 25th annual Farm History Day celebration, to be held May 9.
Flywheelers President Pat Ingalls tells us the day is all about teaching young people about the state’s agriculture traditions. Everyone’s welcome to come and see demonstrations put on by about 80 volunteers.
“We do a lot of hands-on displays that day, such as grinding grain, shelling corn, draw shaving wood off of a log, cross-cutting with a saw, and we do have an active sawmill running that day also in a shingle mill,” Ingalls said. “And all of our buildings are open. We do also do candle dipping and some blacksmithing.”
Ingalls says the day is mostly focused on farm machinery.
Past Farm History Days have attracted more than 2,500 students as schools throughout Southwest Michigan turn the event into a field trip for the day. Ingalls says they get plenty of home-schooled kids as well.
The 25th anniversary celebration of Farm History Day on May 9 will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Flywheelers Museum. It’s free to get in, and Ingalls invites everyone.
