A new report says Metro Detroit’s economy lags behind other major American cities.

The research from the Detroit Regional Chamber says the area ranks in the bottom third in the nation for educational attainment, GDP, population, and jobs. However, Chamber CEO Sandy Baruah says unemployment has remained under 5% for three years in a row.

Unemployment is also another positive story,” Baruah said. “The employment growth between 2020 and 2024 nationally was 11% and our region matched that exactly.”

The report does say Metro Detroit is one of the most affordable areas nationwide to buy a home. It’s also number one for business-funded research and development.
