Commuters in Berrien County should prepare for additional closures on I-94 next week as the Michigan Department of Transportation continues its rebuilding project.

MDOT spokesman Nick Schirripa tells us that on Monday, April 7, the westbound ramp to Napier Avenue will be closed, with a detour directed to southbound US-31 leading to Napier Avenue.

“We’re kind of getting to that point in the project where we’re going to start seeing single-ramps close,” Schirripa says. “We know Napier is one of them, and Pipestone Road is the next one that will happen, as well as Niles Avenue. Everything’s moving, we’re making progress, and that’s a good thing.”

This year’s work on I-94 involves reconstructing the westbound lanes between Washington Avenue and Britain Avenue. What can we expect to happen next in this year’s project?

“This year, obviously, Napier Avenue, Pipestone and Niles Avenue, M139, those are all going to have different points to be closed for the westbound, mainline repaving,” Schirripa says. “A couple of those are going to have work done on the ramps as we’re doing the westbound side.”

The entire I-94 rebuilding project is expected to be completed next year and will include the restoration of the eastbound lanes and the bridge over Pipestone Road.
