Researchers say artificial sweeteners make us hungrier. That’s according to a new study posted in Nature Metabolism.
Sandra Lerner is a family medicine doctor in Southfield and Board Certified in obesity medicine and told us more.
“Those non-nutritive sweeteners desensitize us to the sensation of sweetness,” Lerner said. “So we need more sweetness to experience that flavor. So it’s a desensitizing process.”
Lerner said there are other reasons artificial sweeteners may make you more hungry, including by stimulating insulin production, leaving you in an artificial hypoglycemic state. She said eat artificial sweeteners in moderation or eliminate them from your diet altogether.
