Severe storms on the horizon for Wednesday in SWM

untitled-4

Another round of severe weather is expected to hit Wednesday afternoon into the evening.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Steinwedel tells us that storms are likely to begin around 4 p.m. and go until about 11 p.m.

“The late afternoon and evening period is when that severe potential is,” Steinwedel says. “We have a lot of strong flow and shear to work with, and it really just depends how unstable and warm that we get. We really will determine how large scale this severe weather potential is, but it is possible in that window.”

All severe weather hazards are possible, including damaging winds, flooding, and isolated tornadoes. Steinwedel mentions that there is approximately a 10% chance of a tornado occurring in Southwest Michigan.

“Make sure you walk through your plan for severe storms, which would be if a storm comes and you’re in your home or you’re at work or whatever, what’s that safe spot in your home, which is usually at a lowest level, away from windows, those kind of things,” Steinwedel says.

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.

Rainfall amounts are anticipated to be between half an inch and three-quarters of an inch, with higher totals possible during thunderstorms.
