The Michigan Department of Transportation has opened its 2026 Paint the Plow, with this year’s theme “Give plows space; it’s not a race.”
MDOT spokesperson Jocelyn Garza tells us Paint the Plow continues to encourage students to use their creativity to communicate safe winter driving practices for all Michigan residents.
“One of the things that we really hope that the students take home is the same safety message that we’re looking to them to help promote,” Garza says. “We always take an opportunity when we’re able to talk with the students about why that theme exists, how we came to choose that theme, and why it’s important for them.”
This year the program, open to all Michigan high schools, is focusing on reminding people on the new law to give at least 200 feet of space behind snowplows unless overtaking or passing.
Design applications will be accepted through May 16. Winning designs will be visible on the plow blades along various state lines in Michigan through the upcoming winter.
