If you still haven’t upgraded your driver’s license to a REAL ID, the deadline to do so is fast approaching.
AAA of Michigan’s Adrienne Woodland tells us under a 2005 law, everyone will need a REAL ID soon if they want to do any travel by air.
“In just under 40 days, as of May 7 of this year, U.S. travelers will be required to have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights,” Woodland said.
Woodland says the deadline to get a REAL ID has been extended several times, but AAA doesn’t think it’s going to be postponed again. And you’ll need that enhanced security ID to do more than board flights.
“Not only is the REAL ID important in terms of boarding domestic flights, but it’s also required for Americans looking to access certain federal facilities, such as military bases, nuclear facilities, or federal buildings.”
Woodland says REAL ID-compliant cards will have a star somewhere on the front to indicate you’ve passed certain security clearances.
You can upgrade your driver’s license to a REAL ID at the Michigan Secretary of State’s office by bringing your ID and a passport or birth certificate. It costs $9.
