Some events are planned around Southwest Michigan this weekend to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
In South Haven, the American Legion will host a ceremony on Saturday. Post commander John Barkley tells us everyone will start to sign in at the American Legion at noon. Then they’ll honor the veterans.
“Starting about 12:30, then we’ll be having a ceremony, including a brief introduction, an invocation, a welcome home certificate, including some beads and a pin that will be presented as well,” Barkley said.
South Haven Mayor Annie Brown will also read a proclamation. Barkley says about three million Americans fought in Vietnam, about 57,000 died there, and about 2,600 from Michigan died in Vietnam.
“There are mixed opinions as far as the value of the war, but those who fought there fought with bravery and they were very proud of what they did.”
About 50 veterans of Vietnam have so far signed up to attend the ceremony, which Barkley says is open to everyone.
Meanwhile, in Berrien County, a ceremony to mark the end of the war will be held Saturday at the Vietnam Memorial on the bluff in St. Joseph starting at 10 a.m. There will be a pinning ceremony for the veterans on hand, guest speakers, a musical performance, and students from nearby schools with Thank You and Welcome Home cards for the veterans.
The Berrien County Veterans Services office invites everyone to attend.
