Benton Harbor Area Schools Superintendent Kelvin Butts has announced that he will step down after two years in his role.
His decision follows a recent school board meeting where community members voiced their opinions about his performance as superintendent.
In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, Butts confirmed that he would not be renewing his contract and will conclude his tenure with the district on June 30. He expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved during his time in office and emphasized his confidence in the strength of the school community.
The Board of Education thanked Butts for his leadership and acknowledged the progress made under his guidance.
“Thank you for your partnership, support, and trust,” Butts said. “It has truly been a privilege to serve Benton Harbor Area Schools, and I will always carry the memories and experiences from this incredible community with me.”
In the final months of the school year, Butts will collaborate closely with the Board of Education and the leadership team to ensure a smooth transition, while continuing to prioritize support for the students of Benton Harbor Area Schools.
The Board will be looking for a new superintendent over the next few weeks, and update the community throughout the process.
