A citizens group has filed a petition to change the Michigan Constitution.

Prove It Michigan wants to require proof of citizenship to register to vote and also proof of identity to cast a ballot. It would fix a loophole that allowed a Chinese citizen to vote in last November’s general election, says Fred Wszolek, spokesperson for the ballot proposal committee.

Most people are surprised that you actually don’t have to prove that you’re a citizen when you register to vote,” Wszolek said. “They’re kind of shocked that that’s not already a requirement.”

Wszolek says once the ballot language is approved, his group will start collecting signatures. They hope that can happen by the end of next month, and they’ll need a minimum of 446,198 signatures.

If successful, the issue would go in front of voters on the 2026 general election ballot.
