Cass County gears up for spring hazardous waster collection

Cass County residents can get a head start on spring cleaning by attending a free hazardous waste event next month.

Sponsored by the Cass County Board of Commissioners, the county will hold its annual spring Household Hazardous Waste and tire collection on April 23.

Interim County Administrator Jennifer Rentfrow tells us that this event allows residents to dispose of their used tires and hazardous waste items.

“These events are part of our ongoing efforts to keep Cass County as beautiful, clean, and safe as possible,” Rentfrow says. “Improper disposal of those hazardous wastes can be harmful to our environment, groundwater, public health, and just in general our natural resources that we treasure.”

Residents may drop off up to 300 pounds of household chemicals such as batteries, car fluids, garden fertilizers, and other chemical or hazardous waste items from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Cass County Road Commission. After the 300-pound limit, there will be a charge of $1.74 per additional pound. Major appliances, air conditioners, fireworks, motor oil, and fire extinguishers will not be accepted.

Tires can also be dropped off at the road commission office until 6 p.m.

If anyone is unable to attend this event, there will be a fall event scheduled for September 24.
