The city of South Haven has hired a new police chief following a month-long search.
On Thursday, the city announced that Dennis Honholt has accepted the position of Chief of Police. Honholt, who is currently the chief of police and director of public safety in Dover, Tennessee, brings 31 years of law enforcement experience to the role.
Born and raised in Hudsonville, MI, Honholt graduated from the Southeastern Leadership Academy and has completed numerous law enforcement courses over his career, including the FBI Enforcement Executive Development Association’s Trilogy Course.
Honholt has previously served as a detective with the Clarksville Police Department, as a Deputy Sheriff and Court Officer for the 60th District Court, and as an investigator with the United States Investigative Service, among other positions.
City manager Kate Hosier tells us Honholt has a passion for community service and is involved with several outreach programs within the community he serves.
Honholt says he looks forward to being back home where he has family still living in Southwest Michigan.
He will start his tenure in South Haven on April 1, 2025, replacing Kevin Swope, who stepped down last month.
