Warm weather is officially here, as March 20 marks the first official day of the spring season, meaning beach season is just around the corner. Folks here in Berrien County have been busy getting the beaches ready to welcome visitors.
Parks Director Jill Adams shared that staff has been working hard all offseason to prepare for the warm weather activities.
“A lot of the work that happens off-season includes getting our vendors ready, updating training manuals for our staff, budgeting for staff and supplies, working on projects, going out to bid for projects,” Adams says. “So there’s more office work, I think, in the off-season.”
In 2023, Silver Beach County Park welcomed approximately 697,000 people from January – December, with most being during the summer months. Adams mentioned that staff has been out since the beginning of this month to prepare for guests.
“It does take a couple of months at least to get sand put back in place,” Adams says. “And the water safety aspect of it is important as well with lifeguard tower, signage, buoys to mark the swim zone. All of those things need to be purchased or repaired or updated prior to when we start putting that stuff out.”
Additionally, Adams noted that they are hiring individuals interested in becoming lifeguards or park rangers. More information can be found on the Berrien County Parks website.
