South Haven sets new ordinance for short-term rentals

The South Haven City Council has officially approved and adopted the new ordinance for short-term rentals last night.

After last month’s public hearing, the STR workgroup met with stakeholders, both opposed and against the drafted ordinance, to bring a new ordinance to the council during Monday night’s meeting.

Citycouncil woman Mary Hosley relayed what changes were made specifically to occupancy limits and bathrooms.

“One factor that we really focused on was safety for occupancy,” Hosley said. “The number of occupants, two per bedroom and two per finished floor, could be reduced if the sleeping areas are not compliant with the safety egress requirements.”

The newly adopted ordinance sets occupancy limits, creates zoning restrictions, and requires existing short term rentals to comply with the new rules within 180 days after adoption.
