First phase of Dickinson Park project nearly complete

As we reported last week the Dickinson Park upgrades are well underway and very close to being complete.

City of St. Joseph Public Works director Greg Grothous tells us the first phase of the project is almost complete, with hopes of seeing St. Joseph’s softball and baseball teams on the field in 6 weeks.

“We do know that they’re kind of shooting for the first of May to kind of fully open things back up and get the baseball and softball teams back out there and practicing and playing,” Grothous says. “In the next couple weeks, they’re going to try to wrap up restoration, get the grass growing so it’s not just a mud pit.”

Phase 2 of the project will include installing a restroom and shelter building, and improving the parking lot, and playground.

“That is under design right now,” Grothous says. “We’re hoping to go out to build for the restroom and parking lot later this spring with construction late summer, early fall to begin, and work would happen through the winter with the goal of having restrooms opened up in time for the 2026 baseball-softball season.”

In 2023, the city received a $260,000 grant from the Michigan DNR to improve the park, with a $260,000 match from the city. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by spring 2026.
