The city of Benton Harbor is set to launch a new initiative aimed at cleanliness and code compliance, starting at the end of March.

On March 30, the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety’s Code Compliance Division will launch “Beautify Benton Harbor,” a program designed to combat blight and improve the living standards for its residents.

Deputy Director of Public Safety, Brian Kazmierzak, tells us that the program will tackle issues like abandoned buildings, illegal dumping, and ensuring landlords take responsibility for their properties.

“Last year alone, we had a 75% increase in enforcement actions throughout the city,”Kazmierzak says. “However, there’s still so much more to do and, we have to get a handle on what our city looks like.”

Through September 30, code compliance officers will carry out inspections throughout the city, looking for violations of local ordinances. These inspections will cover streets, rental properties, residential homes, and other structures.

“We want to make this an initiative all the way around,” Kazmierzak says. “It affects how people live, but it also affects what everything looks like as well.”

Those found in violation are likely to be fined. The department stresses that cooperation from residents will lead to collaborative solutions to any issues. Residents are encouraged to report problems by contacting code compliance at 269-927-8418.
