Michigan Works programs seeing some funding cuts; no changes planned in Southwest Michigan

Two Michigan Works locations in Mid-Michigan are closing due to coming funding cuts expected at Capital Area Michigan Works. However, that doesn’t mean Michigan Works statewide will be affected.

In Southwest Michigan, Michigan Works falls under Kinexus Group, which runs a variety of organizations. Kinexus Chief Marketing Officer Mary Morphey tells us as a result of the way Kinexus is set up, if cuts are coming to Michigan Works programs elsewhere in the state, they might not affect programming here.

Because of our unique business model with multiple lines of effort, we actually have a pretty diversified funding portfolio, which allows us to navigate funding uncertainties, and right now the situation is pretty fluid, so we don’t anticipate any cuts at this point,” Morphey said.

Morphey says Kinexus gets funding from a combination of state, federal, and private sources. At this time, there’s nothing being cut at Michigan Works Berrien, Cass, Van Buren.

Capital Area Michigan Works has announced it’s shutting down offices in Charlotte and St. Johns. That’s due to a 10% cut in funding for workforce innovation programs coming in July. More information on those cuts will be released next month.
