Could a version of DOGE be coming to Berrien County?
The Berrien County GOP has implemented a leadership structure that includes an accountability team that has within it a “DOGE Leader.” Without directly mentioning DOGE, Berrien County GOP Chair Ashley White has now released a statement, telling us, “The Berrien County GOP is looking forward to our local elected Republican officials following President Donald Trump’s example by identifying and then cutting the waste, fraud, and abuse at all county, township, and city governments.”
Also, the party’s Shawn Hill addressed the Berrien County Board of Commissioners with a similar thought last week.
“I think as a whole, when we’ve seen all this stuff coming out in the DOGE for the federal government, I think it’s something that Berrien County needs to actually consider too,” Hill said. “I think there’s a lot of money out there being spent on crazy things. That’s why we’re having to get the 8% increase in our taxes for our property.”
We asked Berrien County Administrator Brian Dissette Wednesday if there’s been discussion among commissioners about a DOGE-like effort locally, and he said, “No, but there’s always tomorrow.” Commissioners could be hearing more as soon as Thursday.
You can read the Berrien County GOP’s full statement below:
“The Berrien County GOP fully supports President Donald Trump in his effort to cut waste, fraud, and abuse from the Federal Government through the DOGE program. For far too long, our politicians in Washington have failed to act responsibly with taxpayer money and have put the taxpayer in $36.6 trillion of debt. As a result every citizen in the United states owes north of $107,000 as their part of this debt. This excessive government spending is a major contributor to inflation.
In Berrien, we are fortunate that the majority of our elected officials are Republican. The Berrien County GOP is looking forward to our local elected Republican officials following President Donald Trump’s example by identifying and then cutting the waste, fraud, and abuse at all county, township, and city governments. We look forward to a day when property taxes go down instead of up and when spending shrinks instead of grows. As the Berrien County GOP, we stand ready to partner with, support, and applaud these efforts as they unfold.”
