There are some big sidewalk projects happening in Lincoln Township this year.
Speaking to the Lincoln Township Board of Trustees Tuesday, engineer Brandon Mieras with Williams and Works said a $1.5 million federal allocation to construct a ten-foot-wide shared use path along South Roosevelt will have to be spent this year. The federal money secured by Congressman Tim Walberg won’t cover the whole project, though.
“So our estimate right now is at 1.855 [ million dollars ],” Mieras said. “We’re optimistic that that is a very — million — very good price, and that’s a big project. This is a big project for the township, and this is a key section of the sidewalk system here.”
The first contract the township will have to award will be for the removal of about 65 trees along South Roosevelt from Hidden Pines to Marquette Woods Road. That’ll cost the township $61,000, and trustees approved a motion to award the contract, pending final approval of the overall project, likely in June.
Trustee Dick Stauffer stressed the township may have to scrape together a couple of hundred thousand dollars to get this all done, but the project represents the number one priority in the master plan and will connect neighborhoods to schools and shopping.
Also Tuesday, Mieras said work is about to start on a new sidewalk along John Beers Road from Roosevelt to the Stevensville village limits.
“We had our pre-construction meeting today…They’re scheduled start date is March 31, and they should be completed before school gets out.”
That work is possible thanks to $500,000 in grant funding, another $400,000 allocated for the township by state Representative Joey Andrews, and about $25,000 in township funds. Stauffer previously told us this sidewalk will be an improvement for residents who will now be able to walk from their neighborhoods to the village.
