Lake Michigan College will host a roundtable discussion on women’s health issues next week.
The engagement, held through LMC’s Literacy and Numeracy Across the Curriculum working group, will feature health experts from multiple disciplines and allow for a question-and-answer session.
Lia McCoskey, with the LMC English faculty, tells us the college holds these roundtables each year, focusing on issues of particular relevance at the time. Organizers this year saw women’s health becoming a more talked-about issue.
“This has really kind of been building for a few decades, but just recently it’s getting its own kind of niche market,” McCoskey said. “They’re getting funding. People are starting to look at this as its own unique kind of niche area of health.”
McCoskey says the panelists will include an LMC nursing program instructor, a retired doctor, an occupational therapist, and a lactation specialist. They’ll drive the roundtable agenda.
“But we’re going to talk a little bit possibly about misconceptions about women’s health and what needs to be addressed. We’re going to talk about different lifestyle habits that have the most impact on women’s health and also maybe some barriers.”
Past roundtables have focused on affordable housing, water quality, and artificial intelligence, and McCoskey says they’ve generated strong student interaction.
Next week’s roundtable discussion will be open to anyone. It will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4 in the Main Academic Building of the LMC Benton Township campus. More details below.
This free event is open to the public and will be held in the Main Academic Building, Room L-310/311, on the College’s Benton Harbor Campus, 2755 E. Napier Avenue.
