Lieutenant Governor pushes for early pre-K

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist paid a visit to an Oakland County Early Childhood Center to promote early pre-K for all kids in Michigan this week.

Even though there has to be bipartisan agreement in the Legislature, Gilchrist is confident common ground can be found.

This particular piece is something I think we’re going to find bipartisan support for,” Gilchrist said. “Kids being educated should be hard to argue against, and I think that families all over Michigan, regardless of who they’re represented by in the legislature, I think are calling for more resources to be available. And we think that this is a big part of that. So I’m optimistic that we’re going to be able to land in a good place.”

It’s also something the governor plans to outline in her State of the State address this week. Last year, close to 50,000 children were helped through the program.
