From the radio world to the art world, there’s a new exhibition up at The Space In-Between art gallery in Benton Harbor showcasing the work of Midwest Family Marketing and Media Chief Operating Officer Dave Doetsch.

“Time Stands Still: By Dave Doetsch” is now available for viewing at 196 Water Street, featuring watercolor/charcoal and acrylic paintings produced over the last five years or so.

Doetsch tells us he at first studied art in college, but had to switch to another area of study due to conflicts with his participation in football. Years went by with his career in radio and marketing before he got back into painting. How did that happen?

During COVID,” Doetsch said. “I was encouraged to think about what made time stand still, right? COVID had a lot of stresses and a lot of isolation, and so I was encouraged to think about what made time stand still.”

Doetsch tells us it can take a day to several to complete one painting. He’s inspired by emotion, color, and music.

Colors come into my mind, and so I will think about colors, and I’ll set those colors aside. Like I’ll put them down on a table, and just let them be there for a few days as my brain starts thinking, how could those colors fall, and then what music might associate with it. Once I get kind of a moment of inspiration within that, I just attack it.”

Doetsch says he can show you paintings that reflect what he was feeling at the time of their creation, whether he was stressed or optimistic.

You can now see his art at The Space Between by contacting the gallery. We have the information for doing so at or website. The art will be available for viewing — or for sale — through March 15. There will also be a special reception on Saturday, March 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.

So, how’s it feel to finally have a public exhibition?

It is really exhilarating,” Doetsch  said. “I look at the arc of where this is where I wanted my life to go at one point, to here I am and this happening, and it’s happening in a more natural way. It is really fun. It’s really fulfilling. And it’s kind of made the arc of what that story was have a cool continuation.”

Everyone’s invited to stop in and see the work of the latest art talent to emerge in Southwest Michigan. You can arrange to have the gallery open when you stop in by calling 269-861-0030.
