Two flu deaths involving children have been reported in Michigan.

One of the deaths was in Wayne County, and the other in Genesee County. Out of the respect for the family, the ages of the children were not released.

Joe Coyle, epidemiologist with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, did say influenza will be more risky for populations that are very young or old.

Influenza is going to impact on populations that do not have as robust immune systems, and certainly you see that in the youngest of children, who may observe the most serious sort of complications from influenza infection,” Coyle said.

Several other pediatric deaths are currently under investigation but have not yet been confirmed to be flu-related.
