The hot button issue of the mascot used by Dowagiac Union Schools is under discussion again.
The DUS Board of Education last week hosted a workshop to hear from members of the Pokagon Tribal Council, who are asking that the Chieftains name be dropped. The board in 2023 opted to keep the Chieftains name after a previous request from the Pokagons to stop using it. Speaking last week, Tribal Chair Matt Wesaw said studies have found it’s hurtful to Native American students when their culture and history are used inappropriately.
“It is my firm belief that you as school board members, one of your main responsibilities is to create the safest and most positive learning environment for all students,” Wesaw said. “Not just a few, but all students.”
Wesaw said the previous discussions on the matter only focused on the school district’s legal position.
“But what was very disappointing to me was the lack of concern for even a single child in the school system, one who was being harmed by the ceremonial or the use of ceremonial feathers, regalia, whatever you want to call it.”
Wesaw said the tribe has rescinded a joint resolution from the 1990s that allowed DUS to use Pokagon imagery in its logo. He told school board trustees it won’t be easy for them to change the school’s mascot, but they have a responsibility to create a safe environment for all students.
Board President Robert Ickes told Wesaw trustees will review information he’s provided and look into creating a committee or task force. The mascot issue was not on the agenda for the board’s meeting this week.
