More recall petitions have been filed against members of the Benton Harbor City Commission.
Targeted this time around are Mayor Marcus Muhammad, Second Ward Commission SaTanna Warren, and First Ward Commissioner Sharon Henderson.
The petition language submitted to the Berrien County Clerk’s office says Muhammad and Warren should be removed for voting to appoint Alex Little as the city manager. The Benton Harbor City Commission officially appointed Little to the post on December 2. Meanwhile, the petition language against Henderson says she should be removed for “operating in violation of Section 22 of the city’s charter merit system, by omitting the duties and responsibilities of the civil service board.”
The petitions were filed by three different residents, Gershon Clay, Tommie Earl Jackson, and Dennie Brown. They were filed across multiple days this month. The petitions from Clay and Jackson target Muhammad and Warren. Brown’s petition targets Henderson. He also initially filed language against Commissioner Ron Singleton, but that was withdrawn.
The Berrien County Clerk’s office says it will hold clarity hearing for all three members of the city commission starting at 9 a.m. on February 26. If the Berrien County Election Commission finds the language of the petitions clear, then signatures could start to be collected to force recall elections.
