Michigan Senate Republicans are calling for a special election for a vacant seat. They point out that 270,000 people remain unrepresented in the 35th District because the seat was vacated by outgoing Democrat Kristin McDonnell-Rivett, who was elected to U.S. Congress. That district covers areas like Bay City, Midland, and Saginaw.

Senate Republican leader Aric Nesbitt is now calling for Lieutenant Governor Garland Gilchrist to use his role as acting governor and schedule a special election while Governor Gretchen Whitmer is out of the state.

My hope is that the governor calls a special election as quickly as possible so that their voices can be heard and their constituent needs are taken care of,” Nesbitt said.

Nesbitt notes that it usually takes 17 days on average for a governor to call a special election and so far it’s been 100 days and counting with no special election called for as of yet.
