The Lincoln Township Board of Trustees is moving closer to allowing food trucks to operate in the township.
At Tuesday’s regular meeting, trustees heard from the Planning Commission’s Marc Florian that the body has decided food trucks could operate under the same rules as peddlers, which are governed by the police ordinance. Therefore, the township will set up a permitting process for them.
“Where they can come in, just like a peddler does, seek a license for $25 to be able to offer their services, basically,” Florian said.
Florian said having a permitting process for food trucks will enable the township to keep track of them. He said he wants to avoid a situation where several trucks show up to a park on a Saturday in the summer and start selling hotdogs without anyone’s permission. He envisions something more orderly.
“What we’re talking about is situations where the likes of a Tractor Supply, for example, decides that they’d like to have some additional attendance, perhaps, at their event they might be having, and they allow a food vendor to come in and sell food to the public.”
Township planners realized last year Lincoln Township doesn’t currently allow food trucks when they were contacted by a vendor who found they were unable to operate in the community. The Planning Commission has been working on the issue ever since.
Florian told trustees Tuesday the permit fee would be between $15 and $25, depending on how much work they are for staff. Trustees approved the fee, with Michael Brown voting no. He said there should be more simplicity in the process for food truck operators.
