Just like alcohol or opioids, experts say people who often smoke marijuana can get addicted with a higher risk of death. Those are the results of a new JAMA Network study of 11 million people, which finds those with Cannabis Use Disorder have a six-fold elevated risk of death compared to non-users.
Detroit Medical Center Doctor Andrew King says Cannabis Use Disorder can cause several issues.
“Psychotic behavior, increased prevalence of symptoms that would be on the schizophrenia spectrum,” King said. “There’s been association of cannabis use, of course, with intoxication and poor driving performance and increased risk of motor vehicle accidents.”
King says most people aren’t aware of the addictive qualities of marijuana.
