Presentation on Southwest Michigan’s role in helping escaped slaves planned in South Haven

The South Haven Historical Association will hold a presentation Tuesday on the role Southwest Michigan played helping slaves escape to freedom before the Civil War.

The association will welcome Dr. Fred Johnson III for “UNDAUNTED BY THE STORMS — African Americans Along the Lakeshore” at Hartman School in South Haven at 7 p.m.

Dr. Johnson is an award-winning speaker and professor of history at Hope College. His specific area of expertise is 19th century United States history with a focus on the Civil War. He’ll talk about Southwest Michigan’s role during the Civil War and Reconstruction as it witnessed political and socioeconomic progress and challenges that confronted Black and white Michiganders.

Tuesday’s presentation is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
