Consumers Energy has pledged $5 million to help its customers pay their winter heating bills.

Consumers Energy Spokesperson Brian Wheeler tells us with a cold snap last month, the company knows many could be struggling. Consumers has given the $5 million to five non-profits around the state so they can work with customers.

We really want people to be aware that help is available right now,” Wheeler said. “If you call 211, that is a free resource that can connect you with these and other non-profits. There are lots of dollars that are available to help people with their winter heating bills right this time of year.”

Wheeler says Consumers Energy wants to make it easier for people to get that help.

Last year in 2024, Consumer Energy worked with over 100,000 customers to help them get access to nearly $70 million in state and federal and other non-profit dollars.”

The $5 million donation announced by Consumers this week is going to TrueNorth Community Services, the United Way of South Central Michigan, the Salvation Army, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund.

Wheeler reminds those looking for utility assistance to call 211 to find out what’s available to them.

Consumers Energy provides both natural gas and electric service to much of Van Buren County.
