Governor Gretchen Whitmer has delivered her proposed 2026 budget to state lawmakers. The spending plan includes a state school budget totaling $21.2 billion.

State Budget Director Jen Flood says that education funding amounts to a record $10,000 per pupil.

In addition to the historic per-pupil funding, this budget also continues free school meals because kids learn best when their bellies are full,” Flood said. “It offers free high-quality pre-K to every four-year-old across the state. It invests in evidence-based approaches to reading and learning and provides $150 million ongoing for student mental health and safety.”

The budget includes $5 billion in state and federal money to pay for state and local road construction and maintenance.

The governor is expected to announce details of her road funding plan next week.
