Congressman Tim Walberg has chaired his first meeting of the U.S. House Committee on Education and Workforce.

Walberg’s “Hearing on the State of American Education” was Wednesday as President Donald Trump seeks to shut down the Department of Education. Walberg said despite the department’s existence, education in America has only been getting worse.

Many students are failing to graduate from high school or college with the skills needed to be successful,” Walberg said. “In too many places, education in core subjects like math and reading is being replaced by indoctrination.”

Walberg said a national assessment on educational progress has found students have still not recovered from the lost COVID years. He thinks the feds are partly to blame.

Many systems have become fixated on teaching divisive ideologies. Unfortunately, these efforts have been fueled by the federal government itself.”

Walberg turned to higher education, saying the student loan program needs reforms so that students pursue subjects that will lead to viable careers.

However, Walberg added there are some bright spots. Walberg said school of choice programs are growing nationwide while a movement of parents seeks to have more influence over the education of their children.
