February 20 is nationally recognized as the Great American Spit Out, an annual event encouraging people to quit using smokeless tobacco for 24 hours.

Battle Creek VA chief of communications Brian Pegouske tells us they are reminding people that practice is perfect and now is the time to quit chewing or spitting.

“The VA really challenges veterans and anybody to take the day to get out or get rid of their smokeless tobacco products and really celebrate healthier teeth and gums and boost their dendritic levels and reduce their overall cancer risk,” Pegouske says.

Five years after you stop, your risk of mouth cancer is cut in half. You can also save money, time, and set a positive example for the younger generation.

“Not using dip or chewing tobacco reduces your risk of oral cancers and cancers of the pancreas and esophagus,” Pegouske says. “Getting rid of those habits increases your overall health and teeth and gums boost energy levels.

Pegouske says you should reach out to your primary caregiver to give yourself the best chance at quitting for good.
