MI Democrats suing House Republicans for holding back approved bills

Michigan Senate Democrats are moving forward with a lawsuit against House Republicans. They call it an invasion of constitutional duty as nine bills from 2024 have yet to reach the governor’s desk through now Republican House Speaker Matt Hall.

State Senator John Cherry is chair of the Senate Labor Committee.

Rather than deliver actual solutions for our public workers, they’ve decided to play political games with people’s livelihoods, further ruining the trust of the Michigan people in the process,” Cherry said.

Hall says Republicans are carrying out a thorough comprehensive legal review, pushing back and saying action on tipped wages and sick leave should be the Legislature’s focus. He previously made comment about Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks.

It’s her first act to sue the House,” Hall said. “It may be harder for her to get some of her bills done if that’s the way she approaches. It’s too bad, you know, bad, bad for bipartisanship, which is what people want.”

Among the nine bills being held up are measures that would increase contributions by public employers to employee healthcare, exempt some forms of public assistance from debt collectors, and allow corrections officers into the Michigan State Police retirement program.
