Construction season is officially upon us. The Michigan Department of Transportation will resume the rebuilding of I-94 next week.

MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us starting Thursday, Feb. 6, work will begin where they left off at the Exit 23 Red Arrow Highway interchange.

“Westbound I-84 to Red Arrow Highway is going to be closed through early June,” Schirripa says. “That’s kind of what we’re looking at. We’ve got to rebuild the bridge on that ramp and rebuild that ramp. So, that’s going to be kind of the first order of business. That’s the first closure folks are going to see.”

Schirripa says the project’s second year will mostly focus on rebuilding westbound I-94 from Washington Avenue to Britain Avenue. Construction is slated to begin in early March.

“There’s going to be several ramps that are also going to be closed during that time,” Schirripa says. “Exit 30 to Napier Avenue, westbound I-94 to Napier Avenue, as well as Napier Avenue to westbound I-94. Those will both be closed and detoured. Pipestone Road to westbound I-94 will also be closed.”

Two lanes of I-94 will be open in each direction during this work, as crews build barriers, install cable guardrails, build culverts, improve drainage, and install new signage.
