Tragedy struck near our nation’s capital Wednesday night, the first commercial airline disaster in the US in 16 years. A Michigan official was there just before the crash.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard left Reagan National Airport in Arlington. He was in D.C. talking to lawmakers and the Trump administration as a member of the National Sheriff’s Association.

Bouchard says it’s surreal to think that it could have been his plane leaving just one hour before the midair crash.

It’s still chilling even to me,” Bouchard said. “My phone kind of blew up a bit. People knew that I was in Washington and leaving. ‘Were you on that plane?’ and things like that. Kind of surreal. Very sad.”

Bouchard says he can’t imagine what the families of the victims are going through. of the victims are going through.
